Adam Smith sering disebut sebagai yang pertama mengembangkan ilmu ekonomi pada abad 18 sebagai satu cabang tersendiri dalam ilmu pengetahuan. Melalui karya besarnya Wealth of Nations, Smith mencoba mencari tahu sejarah perkembangan negara-negara di Eropa. Sebagai seorang ekonom, Smith tidak melupakan akar moralitasnya terutama yang tertuang dalam The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Perkembangan sejarah pemikiran ekonomi kemudian berlanjut dengan menghasilkan tokoh-tokoh seperti Alfred Marshall, J.M. Keynes, Karl Marx, hingga peraih hadiah Nobel bidang Ekonomi tahun 2006, Edmund Phelps.
